James Wharram, multihull pioneer. Thousands of Wharram boats have been built in sizes ranging from 14 to 63 feet. They have an impressive record of offshore voyaging and can be found in harbors around the world.
Pioneer of Offshore Multihulls
In the 1956, James Wharram built the first ocean sailing catamaran in Britain and sailed it across the Atlantic in with a crew of two young women. His design was based on the double canoes used by ancient Polynesians. He started selling designs for self-builders in 1965.
Wharram boats are intentionally simple, sturdy boats that are relatively inexpensive to build and maintain.
